We’ve got answers.

To be part of masters swimming, you don’t have to be a master at all! You just have to be 18. In masters swimming there are few rules aside from respecting the coaches and collaborating with the swimmers in your lane. Most of our members swim 2-3 times per week. There are no attendance requirements. Arriving late from work, leaving early because of a shoulder injury, putting on fins because you are tired – all are acceptable. We have wonderful coaches and we encourage you to communicate with them regarding your needs.

We have a range of skill level from beginners to masters national champions across an age range that spans ages 18-78. There is a lane, and a spot in every lane, for everyone. We do not have a minimum skill level, fitness level, speed level, endurance level, etc. We do expect that swimmers know how to swim at least 100 yards continuously. FFH is not a learn to swim program.

Beginners are always welcome and we hope you will find that the FFH are an incredibly friendly and welcoming group of people. Our coaches are available to support you as you navigate the world of masters swimming. There are always a variety of drills that help you to improve your stroke.
-
Each FFH practice is prepared and overseen by one of our coaches. Practices consist of interval training and swimmers in each lane work together according to their abilities. We do not offer open lap swimming. Swimmers select lanes based on their current level; the coach on deck will help you find the ideal lane at your first few practices. Terms/expectations will be explained to you by your lane mates or the coach. Swimmers are not required to know how to do flip turns, swim all strokes, or even have a history of swimming. We have runners, triathletes, paddle players, dragon boat rowers, and piccolo players; our backgrounds are diverse, but we all share a love of swimming.
-
Our coaches are a range of experienced swimmers including current and former college swimmers, local high school and club youth swim coaches, triathlon coaches and individuals who have specialized in coaching masters swimming. Coaches work collaboratively to create workouts that help our athletes push themselves and continuously improve. You can see the current list of coaches here.

We swim seven days a week, year round. Our specific schedule changes each season, and Covid has required us to be flexible and accommodating as we swim in pools shared by other teams. You can find the most up to date schedule here

You will be in good company! There are many FFH who returned to swimming after a long hiatus and they are really enjoying being back in the water.

To be a FFH you must first join US Masters Swimming (USMS). Note the USMS membership spans January 1st through December 31st. USMS membership provides our club with liability insurance; we simply cannot have anyone in the water without this protection. In other words, when we sign a contract to rent water, we are asserting that all participants are protected by the USMS insurance policy. Therefore, if someone is NOT a member, we are in violation of that agreement. Join USMS here

No. You can swim as little or as much as you want. Many FFH swim three days a week. You can come late, leave early. We all have busy lives!
-
That’s not a problem – though you might surprise yourself! We encourage swimmers to try butterfly, even some form, such as one arm butterfly.

Some of our practices may be open to local drop in swimmers. To swim as a local drop in swimmer, check our drop in swimming page; these practices will also be specifically marked on our schedule. Importantly, all drop ins must have an active USMS number. Drop in swimmers must GET VERIFIED — once you complete this process we will add you to our verified drop in swimmer list and you can buy your drop in passes! We welcome out of town drop in swimmers all year round at every practice.

Most practices have 3-5 people per lane.
